In the 19th century, the Wichita area was acquired by the United States from France with the Louisiana Purchase. Then the area became part of Kansas Territory in 1854, and then added to the state of Kansas in 1861.

In the 20th century, Wichita generated much oil wealth after the discovery of oil and natural gas. Over the next few decades, the city saw the expansion of the aviation and aircraft manufacturing industries. During World War II, the Wichita Municipal Airport hosted the Wichita Army Airfield and Boeing Airplane Company Plant No. 1.
