History of Stockton
Well before its incorporation into the United States, the area of Stockton was occupied by a branch of Northern Valley Yokuts Indians, otherwise known as the Yatchicumne. The Yatchicumne originally named the area Pasasimas, to which later became known as downtown Stockton.
When the California Gold Rush started in the 19th century, Europeans and Americans started to arrive in the Stockton area on their way to the gold fields. Later in the century, Stockton became home to thousands of Chinese people. In 1850, Stockton was officially incorporated into the US.
In the 20th century, Stockton became a hub for the railroad and military industries, largely thanks to World War I and II. By the start of the 21st century, some of the military depots had been either redeveloped as commercial property, or simply closed (e.g. Naval Reserve Center).
Stockton Economy
In part due to the California Gold Rush, Stockton was known as an agricultural community. In recent years, the city had diversified into other industries such as telecommunications, transportation, tourism, and manufacturing.
In the past 30 years, Stockton has increased in size with shopping districts, construction of revitalization projects, and was disproportionately affected by the 2007 subprime mortgage financial crisis. In 2012, Stockton became one of the largest US city to file for Chapter 9 bankruptcy protection, to which it eventually exited in 2015.
